Pope denies resignation rumors, hopes to visit Kyiv and Moscow

Pontiff says retirement could come one day, but announcement in a few months not on the cards

Pope Francis has dismissed rumors he plans to step down soon and says he hopes to visit Moscow and Kyiv after traveling to Canada later this month.

Francis also told Reuters in an interview published on Monday that the idea “never crossed my mind” to announce a planned retirement at the end of the summer, although he repeated that he may one day resign as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI did in 2013.

He revealed that his knee problemwhich forced him to use a wheelchair for more than a month, was caused by a ‘small fracture’ which occurred when he walked awkwardly while the ligament in his knee was inflamed.

He said it was “slowly improving” with laser and magnet therapy.

Francis was to visit congo and south sudan this week but had to cancel the trip because doctors said he needed more therapy. He said he was on board to travel to Canada July 24-30 and said he hoped to visit Russia and Ukraine afterwards.
