RV adventures and as most people call “vanlife” have recently become more popular in the United States. In fact, recreational vehicle sales set a record high in 2021, although the quality of these recreational vehicles took a hit.

That said, going for life in a van doesn’t always mean you have to drive around a huge RV. Ryan from Vaan Design Co. shows us how to do with his modified 1986 VW Vanagon with this c / o Youtube’s tour Go small. Live big! channel.

As you can see, Ryan’s van isn’t huge, but you’d be surprised at the myriad of customizations he made inside to maximize space.

But first, let’s talk about the exterior. Coated in a bronze beige metallic paint job, Ryan’s Vanagon comes with modern niceties like LED lighting, as well as functional off-road tools. The van previously had a sunroof. He had to swap it out for a fixed high roof for a more comfortable, standing interior space.

For the power plant, Ryan chose to equip his Vanagon with a 2.5-liter Subaru EJ25 engine developing 165 horsepower. It’s much more powerful than the original Vanagon engine and, according to Ryan, it’s more reliable as well.

As with most compact motorhomes, the cabin is where the magic happens. Despite the limited space, Ryan was able to fit in a kitchen, sink, hidden tables, two beds, and even a hidden toilet. All possible storage and functional spaces are intelligently used, it must be said.

This custom Vanagon gets its power from a lithium battery, charged in three ways, namely solar via a total of 180 watts of panels, via DC to DC charging while the engine is running, or by plugging in.

The video tour above this story should give you a better look into the interior of Ryan’s compact motorhome, which should give you some ideas if you’re ever in the business. vanlife.
